Perception Alters Reality

I watched a YouTube video of a Tao story by David Lin. This story depicted two men who had similar issues at work, and we’re both unhappy. So, they went together to ask an old sage some advice about whether they should quit their jobs or keep them. As many wise men do, he gave them the perfect answer “just a bowl of rice.”

One man took the advice as he was working just for the food itself, so he quit his job and then became one of the best farmers in the area. The other understood the advice telling him that he was just working to feed himself. So he stopped getting worked up over the small things that didn’t matter and got promoted to a managerial position.

Both men perceived the advice differently, but each was what they needed to hear at the time in order to come to peace with their decision. Whether that decision was staying or leaving, it didn’t matter because your perception of the world is how you react to it.

Like the first man, you take that information as a bit of advice that can help you create independence if that is what you wish. Or you can take the same direction and control the things within your control, like your attitude to those who are mean or disrespectful to you.

Perception is a powerful thing.

“The outer world is a reflection of the inner world. Other people’s perception of you is a reflection of them; your response to them is an awareness of you.”
